Regardless of the form in which you choose to tell your story, you’ll always need words that resonate with your audience. Even if you work with the most visual of all mediums, you can’t do without compelling words. For what’s a video without a script, or an exhibition without a story behind the works of art?
A word on language
As a writer, I love language. But I also realize language is never a goal in itself. It’s a means to an end – a vessel that carries a message from sender to recipient. Writing a story doesn’t just require a wordsmith. Well-written prose is wonderful, but it won’t get you far if it’s not telling readers anything. To reach them, you need to embark on a creative journey that consists of several steps: brainstorming, drafting, outlining, writing, rewriting (more than once), and editing.
What’s the process?
Before I write down a single word, I will need to talk to you. My goal is to unearth your story and capture your voice so I can translate both onto paper. Because when telling a story, it’s not just about choosing the right words. Tone and style are equally, if not more, important.
So we’ll have to schedule at least one call or (virtual) meeting. Whether our conversation is brief or elaborate, it will give us the opportunity to get to know each other. I will ask you a range of questions and jot down everything you tell me. You don’t have to worry about logic, structure, or wording. I’ll be analyzing the things you say as you speak. At some point during our conversation, I will probably suggest one to three tentative outlines so we can create and discuss an initial blueprint on the spot.
Depending on the content you want to create, I might have to perform additional research (we will discuss this prior to the start of the project). Once I’ve gleaned all the information I need, I will write your story in the form we’ve chosen. Two sets of revisions are included in every project. To reassure you, though, revisions tend to go very smoothly. Once we’ve completed the tweaking-and-tuning stage, the content is yours to publish!
